How people pay in Indonesia in 2026
Indonesia has moved from cash to phones in a few years, and a national QR code drives the shift. Bank Indonesia counted 18.09 billion digital payment transactions in the third quarter of 2026, up 39.24% year on year. QRIS, the national QR standard, grew 75.80% over the same period and now serves 70.6 million users and 49.4 million merchants. Every e-wallet and banking app can scan any QRIS code, so a street vendor and a mall store accept the same code.
Online, shoppers mix e-wallets, bank virtual accounts and cash. In the Xendit and Cube Ecommerce Payments Momentum Report 2026, about 60% of Indonesian purchases were paid by e-wallet, 52% by bank transfer and 40% by cash on delivery, and 51% of consumers had abandoned a purchase in the past three months because their preferred method was missing. Cards play a smaller role than in Europe, and paylater is booming under OJK supervision. For merchants and their payment providers, a checkout without QRIS, e-wallets and virtual accounts misses most Indonesian buyers.
- 18.09 billion digital payment transactions in Q3 2026 (Bank Indonesia)
- 70.6 million QRIS users and 49.4 million QRIS merchants in Q3 2026 (Bank Indonesia)
- 1.63 billion BI-FAST retail transfers in Q3 2026 (Bank Indonesia)
- 33.5 million bank BNPL accounts in July 2026 (OJK)
Payment by card in Indonesia
Indonesia has a domestic card switch. Under the Gerbang Pembayaran Nasional (GPN), the National Payment Gateway, domestic transactions with cards issued in Indonesia must be processed domestically, through four switching companies, with a debit card merchant discount rate capped at 1% off-us. Debit cards are everywhere: the payment system association ASPI counted 328.16 million ATM and debit cards at the end of Q2 2026. Most of their use is cash withdrawals, and debit card transaction value slipped 1.09% year on year to Rp1,842 trillion in the quarter as QRIS took over everyday payments.
Credit cards remain a niche. Bank Indonesia statistics show 18.09 million credit cards in June 2026, fewer than a year earlier, though spending rose 13.29% to Rp43.74 trillion that month. Visa and Mastercard brand most credit cards and many debit cards, and they matter for cross-border and tourist spending. Bank Indonesia launched the retail Kartu Kredit Indonesia, a domestic credit card processed through GPN, on August 17, 2026. Card pricing still turns on interchange fees and on knowing how card networks work.

Payment by cash in Indonesia
Cash is losing ground at the counter but not disappearing. Currency in circulation grew 11.77% year on year to Rp1,341 trillion in Q3 2026, according to Bank Indonesia, and most debit card use is still ATM withdrawals. In e-commerce, cash is the default for many small sellers: in BPS data for 2024, 74.79% of e-commerce businesses said cash or cash on delivery was their most used payment method, far ahead of transfers and e-wallets.
Consumers are slowly moving away from it. The Xendit and Cube 2026 report finds that cash on delivery still covers about 40% of Indonesian online purchases, while 40% of respondents say they use it much less than a year ago. Convenience stores are the other cash channel. Shoppers pick a payment code at checkout and pay it at the till of Indomaret or Alfamart, two chains with 24,351 and 21,442 stores at the end of June 2026. The same counters also take e-wallet top-ups and bill payments.

Payment by bank transfer in Indonesia
Bank transfers are a core online payment method in Indonesia, and the virtual account is their checkout form. A virtual account is a unique account number generated for each order at banks such as BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI. The shopper pays it from mobile banking, internet banking or an ATM, and the merchant gets an automatic confirmation. Payment providers such as Xendit connect merchants to virtual accounts at ten banks. In the Xendit and Cube 2026 report, bank transfer covered an estimated 52% of Indonesian online purchases.
Underneath, Bank Indonesia runs BI-FAST, its 24/7 instant payment system. It processed 1.63 billion retail transactions worth Rp4,049 trillion in Q3 2026, up 31.78% year on year. Transfers go up to Rp250 million, with a maximum customer fee of Rp2,500, and BI-FAST also supports request for payment and direct debit services. Bank Indonesia's Payment System Blueprint 2030 keeps retail infrastructure at the top of its agenda. Our guide to account-to-account payments explains why these rails matter for merchants.

Payment by installment and BNPL in Indonesia
Paylater is one of the fastest growing ways to pay in Indonesia, and the regulator now tracks it closely. OJK data show bank BNPL outstanding of Rp31.56 trillion across 33.50 million accounts in July 2026, up 31.22% year on year. BNPL from finance companies grew faster, up 54.65% to Rp13.62 trillion, with gross non-performing financing at 3.03%. Our buy now, pay later explainer covers the model.
Fintech lenders lead the market. Kredivo says it held about 30% of national paylater outstanding in February 2026. Ecosystem players follow: SPayLater on Shopee, GoPay Later in the GoPay app, Akulaku PayLater and Indodana PayLater. A distinctive local feature is that paylater balances can be spent at physical stores by scanning QRIS, so BNPL is no longer limited to online checkouts. Credit card installments at 0% remain common for large purchases, especially electronics.

Payment by digital wallet and X-Pay in Indonesia
In Indonesia, the wallet market runs on local apps rather than Apple Pay or Google Pay, and QRIS ties them together. Any wallet or banking app can pay any QRIS code. In the first half of 2026, QRIS processed 12.55 billion transactions worth Rp1.12 quadrillion, up 93.92% year on year, and from October 1, 2026 the merchant fee is 0% for all merchants on payments up to Rp100,000. QRIS also works abroad: cross-border QRIS links Indonesia with Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China. QRIS Tap adds NFC payments on Android phones, while iPhone access was still under discussion with Apple in 2026.
GoPay, OVO, DANA, ShopeePay and LinkAja lead the wallet market. GoTo's fintech arm counted 28.8 million monthly transacting users in Q2 2026, and DANA reported 200 million registered accounts at the end of 2024. Our explainers on X-Pay and QR code payments in Asia give more context.
