How do Moroccans pay online?

Short answer

Mostly cash on delivery, then cards. Moroccan cards made 44.8 million e-commerce payments worth 12.1 billion dirhams in 2025, up 16%. Mobile wallets and instant transfers are growing but remain small online.

In detail

Mostly by cash on delivery, then by card. In the ANRT survey, 84.1% of online shoppers said they pay cash on delivery. Moroccan cards made 44.8 million e-commerce payments worth 12.1 billion dirhams in 2025, up 16%, according to Bank Al-Maghrib.

Cards online

Banks issue a mix of domestic-only cards and Visa or Mastercard cards. Card acceptance is being rebuilt: since February 2026, merchants are served by several payment institutions rather than a single acquirer, and the domestic interchange cap fell to 0.5% on October 1, 2026.

What is still small

  • Mobile wallets, with 28 million transactions in 2025, growing but marginal online.
  • Instant transfers, live since 2023 and up about 78% in 2025, mostly for transfers between people.
  • BNPL, which arrived in 2024 with the first approved provider.

What it means for payment operators

A Moroccan checkout needs cash on delivery and cards at a minimum, with wallets as an addition. For operators, that means a local acquirer in the new multi-acquirer market, a way to reconcile cash collected by couriers, and the ability to add new methods per merchant as adoption grows.
