Do Indonesians still pay in cash?

Short answer

Yes, especially offline and for cash on delivery. In BPS data for 2024, 74.79% of e-commerce businesses named cash or COD as their most used method. Shoppers can also pay online orders in cash at Indomaret and Alfamart stores.

In detail

Yes, especially offline and for cash on delivery. Cash is losing ground at the counter, but currency in circulation still grew 11.77% year on year to Rp1,341 trillion in Q3 2026, according to Bank Indonesia, and most debit card use is still ATM withdrawals.

Cash in e-commerce

In BPS data for 2024, 74.79% of Indonesian e-commerce businesses said cash or cash on delivery was their most used payment method, far ahead of transfers and e-wallets. Consumers are moving slowly: the Xendit and Cube 2026 report finds that cash on delivery still covers about 40% of online purchases, while 40% of respondents say they use it much less than a year earlier.

Convenience store payments

Convenience stores are the other cash channel. Shoppers pick a payment code at checkout and pay it at the till of Indomaret or Alfamart, two chains with more than 45,000 stores combined in June 2026. The same counters also take e-wallet top-ups and bill payments.

What it means for payment operators

For operators serving Indonesian merchants, cash still needs a place in the checkout, through cash on delivery or convenience store codes. A local provider that confirms payments automatically, and reconciliation that matches each code to its order, keep cash manageable at scale.
