Can operators choose which merchants get pre-chargeback alerts?

Short answer

Yes. Alerts are enabled merchant account by merchant account, so a PayFac, PSP, ISO or ISV decides which merchants get the service and when, and each level of its structure sees only the alerts it is allowed to see.

Activation per merchant account

Pre-chargeback alerts are a service with a cost per alert, so operators switch them on where they pay off: merchants with real dispute volume, high-risk categories, or accounts approaching a monitoring threshold. Activation happens merchant account by merchant account, and can be reversed.

Who sees what

  • The operator's risk team sees alerts across all merchants, filtered by source, status or merchant.
  • A program manager or reseller sees only the alerts of its own merchants.
  • A merchant sees only its own, with Verifi or Ethoca shown as the source and the operator's brand on the screen.

Why this matters

Dispute ratios are monitored per merchant and per acquirer portfolio. An operator can start with the merchants that threaten the portfolio, measure how many claims are resolved before chargeback, and extend the service as a paid option to the rest. Each level of the structure works its own queue without seeing the others, which keeps acquiring relationships and merchant data separate.

Activation can also be tied to onboarding rules, so merchants in categories known for disputes get alerts from their first transaction rather than after the first monitoring letter.
