In detail

India's UPI is the largest instant payment system by volume, with over 24 billion transactions a month in 2026. Brazil's Pix processed almost 80 billion transactions in 2025. Europe's SCT Inst, the UK's Faster Payments and the US RTP and FedNow networks follow.

What the leaders have in common

UPI and Pix grew fast because they were designed for everyday use: QR codes at the counter, payments between people and online checkout, with central bank or national backing and low or no cost for users. Both became default ways to pay, not niche alternatives.

Europe and the US

In Europe, instant euro transfers are becoming the norm under the Instant Payments Regulation. In the US, RTP and FedNow are growing, mainly for business and bill payments rather than retail checkout so far.

Many others

Other markets run their own systems, from PayNow in Singapore to PromptPay in Thailand and Bre-B in Colombia. Each comes with its own rules and acceptance patterns.

What it means for payment operators

Where national instant systems lead, local shoppers expect them at checkout. Supporting them is part of opening a market. On the platform, they are payment methods activated through local provider contracts, reported alongside cards, and the #PayWorldTour guides cover each market's habits.
