In detail

What Wero is

Wero is the digital wallet of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a group of European banks and payment companies. It started with person-to-person instant payments, then moved to e-commerce, and now to physical stores.

How in-store payment will work

Shoppers will pay by tapping their phone at the terminal through NFC, or by scanning a QR code. Early in-store payments will be funded by cards linked to Wero, before payments funded directly by instant account transfers.

Links with existing schemes

In the Netherlands, iDEAL is being migrated to Wero, and the brand appears as iDEAL|Wero during the transition. In Belgium, EPI integrated the Payconiq network, which gives Wero existing acceptance points in stores.

What merchants will need

Terminals and acquirers that support the new method, and checkout pages that display it online.

What it means for payment operators

For your merchants in Europe, Wero is a method to plan for, online now and in stores as it rolls out. Access to local methods and in-store support on one platform lets them add it as their markets go live.
