The rollout
Wero, the wallet of the European Payments Initiative, started with person-to-person payments, then e-commerce. In-store acceptance is the next step. Luxembourg comes first, with Belgium, Germany and France planned progressively from 2027. Until then, Wero is live in e-commerce in five countries, with iDEAL in the Netherlands migrating to the Wero brand.
How in-store will work
- Tapping the phone on a terminal through NFC, or scanning a QR code.
- Early in-store payments funded by cards linked to the wallet, with account-to-account funding following.
- Acceptance through acquirers and terminal providers that join the scheme.
What operators can do now
Connect Wero for e-commerce where it is live, so merchants build the habit online. Plan the in-store connection with terminal providers and acquirers, so the same method appears at the terminal when it launches, under the same transaction record. Merchants with both channels will expect one method, one report and one reconciliation. Operators that prepare the omnichannel plumbing in 2026 will offer Wero in store on day one, rather than a year after the scheme's launch in each country.
