What is TROY?
TROY is Turkey's domestic card scheme, launched by the Interbank Card Center (BKM) in 2016. It reached 90 million cards and 25.3% of card payment value in 2025. Many TROY cards are used only domestically, so merchants selling to Turkey should accept it.
In detail
TROY is Turkey's domestic card scheme. It was launched in 2016 by the Interbank Card Center (BKM), which also runs Turkish card statistics and infrastructure.
Growth
TROY is growing fast on the back of bank issuance. Its card base rose 80% in 2025 to 90 million cards, its transactions reached TL 4.8 trillion, and it now accounts for 25.3% of card payment value in Turkey.
Domestic and international use
Many TROY cards are used only domestically, while most Turkish cards remain co-branded with Visa or Mastercard for cross-border acceptance. A merchant that sells to Turkish shoppers and does not accept TROY may decline cards that work everywhere else in the country.
The wider card market
At the end of June 2026, BKM counted 150.4 million credit cards, 221.6 million debit cards and 99.7 million prepaid cards. Internet payments made up 31% of card spending by value.
What it means for payment operators
For operators serving merchants that sell to Turkey, TROY acceptance comes through local acquirers. Adding it next to Visa and Mastercard, and routing domestic cards locally, lets merchants accept every Turkish card their customers carry.
