In detail
Debit cards. In AMVO's 2026 study, 69% of Mexican online shoppers paid with a debit card, 54% with a credit card and 23% in cash at a retail chain such as OXXO. Shoppers use 2.3 methods on average, so merchants need several options at checkout.
Why the mix is so wide
Mexico is a debit card country: only 28% of the 11.26 billion card payments recorded by Banxico in 2025 were made with credit cards. Cash remains the default for small spending, and many shoppers pay online orders at a store counter.
The rest of the checkout
- Credit cards with meses sin intereses, interest-free monthly installments.
- Cash vouchers at OXXO and other chains, and cash on delivery.
- SPEI bank transfers, confirmed in seconds.
- Wallets such as Mercado Pago, named by 71% of online shoppers in AMVO's ranking.
- Cardless BNPL such as Kueski Pay and Aplazo.
E-commerce reached MXN 941 billion in 2025, 17.7% of retail sales.
What it means for payment operators
A Mexican checkout needs debit and credit cards with MSI, cash vouchers and SPEI at a minimum. Operators serving Mexican merchants can connect local acquirers and providers once and activate the right mix per merchant, which shortens launches in the market.
