What is the Internet of Payment?
The Internet of Payment (IoP) is the ability of connected objects and AI agents, such as cars, EV chargers, appliances or shopping assistants, to make payments on behalf of a person or company, within limits that person has set in advance.
In detail
The Internet of Payment (IoP) is the ability of connected objects and AI agents, such as cars, EV chargers, appliances or shopping assistants, to make payments on behalf of a person or company, within limits that person has set in advance.
Examples
- A car paying for fuel, charging, parking or tolls on its own.
- An appliance reordering supplies when it runs low.
- An AI shopping assistant buying an item within a budget the user set.
- A machine in a factory ordering spare parts.
What it requires
The object or agent needs a payment credential it can use safely, rules that limit what it can spend, and a way for the owner to authorize and review purchases. Card network tokens, which can be bound to a device or an agent and managed independently of the underlying card, play a central role. Recurring and merchant-initiated payment frameworks also apply, since the owner is not present at the moment of payment.
Why it matters
It extends commerce beyond checkout pages. Payments become a background function of products and services.
What it means for payment operators
Platforms serving merchants in mobility, energy or subscriptions will see more payments initiated by objects and agents. Network tokenization and recurring payment infrastructure, with stored credentials and spending rules, are the building blocks your merchants will need.
