What is the difference between RDR and CDRN?
RDR refunds Visa disputes automatically, based on rules the merchant sets in advance, before a chargeback is filed. CDRN sends an alert and gives the merchant 72 hours to decide and issue the refund itself. RDR is instant, CDRN leaves room for a human check.
In detail
RDR refunds Visa disputes automatically, based on rules the merchant sets in advance, before a chargeback is filed. CDRN sends an alert and gives the merchant 72 hours to decide and issue the refund itself. RDR is instant, CDRN leaves room for a human check.
RDR: rules decide
With Rapid Dispute Resolution, the merchant tells Verifi in advance which claims to accept, for example by reason code, amount or customer history. When a Visa claim matches, the cardholder is credited at once and the case never becomes a chargeback. Nobody needs to be on duty.
CDRN: a person decides
With the Cardholder Dispute Resolution Network, the merchant receives an alert with the card, amount, date and reason. Its team checks the order, the delivery or the subscription, then refunds within 72 hours. CDRN can carry Visa and non-Visa disputes.
How merchants combine them
- RDR for small tickets and claims the merchant rarely wins.
- CDRN, or Ethoca for Mastercard, for higher amounts where a check changes the answer.
- Representment only for the disputes worth fighting.
What it means for payment operators
Both services only pay off when each alert lands on the right transaction and is refunded in time. Platforms that match alerts where the payment was processed, and show the time left on every manual alert, turn alerts into fewer chargebacks instead of another inbox.
