Xpay is an industry nickname for mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. They let a phone or watch act as a payment card, using a token instead of the card number and NFC for contactless payments.

In detail

Xpay is an industry nickname for mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. They let a phone or watch act as a payment card, using a token instead of the card number and NFC for contactless payments.

How Xpay wallets work

The cardholder adds a card to the wallet. The card network issues a device token linked to that card. At payment, the wallet sends the token and a one-time cryptogram, and the cardholder approves with biometrics or a passcode.

Where they are used

  • In stores, by tapping the phone or watch on a contactless terminal.
  • In apps and on websites, with a payment button that avoids typing card details.

Why merchants offer them

Faster checkout, fewer typing errors and strong authentication built in. Wallet payments on mobile often convert better than manual card entry.

What they are not

Xpay wallets are not separate payment networks when they hold cards: the payment still runs on card rails. Some wallets also hold other payment methods, depending on the market.

What it means for payment operators

For your merchants, offering Apple Pay and Google Pay is now expected on mobile. A checkout that includes wallet buttons, with tokens handled by the platform, lets them add these methods without separate integrations.
