Is there a chargeback reason code for purchases made by AI agents?

Short answer

Not as of October 2026. Neither Visa nor Mastercard has introduced a reason code specific to agent purchases, so a contested agent purchase follows the same chargeback flow as any other card payment. That makes the evidence decisive: the operator needs the intent reference and agent identifiers attached to the authorization when the chargeback arrives.

In detail

Not as of October 2026. Neither Visa nor Mastercard has introduced a reason code specific to agent purchases, so a contested agent purchase follows the same chargeback flow as any other card payment. That makes the evidence decisive: the operator needs the intent reference and agent identifiers attached to the authorization when the chargeback arrives.

Same codes as any card payment

As of October 2026, neither Visa nor Mastercard has published a reason code specific to purchases initiated by AI agents. A contested agent purchase goes through the usual categories: fraud, authorization, processing error or consumer dispute. The issuer picks the code from what the cardholder says, usually "I did not authorize this" or "not as described".

Why evidence decides

  • The intent reference: what the consumer asked the agent to do, and when.
  • Agent identifiers from the scheme program, passed in the authorization.
  • The authentication outcome or exemption used for the setup or the payment.
  • Delivery or fulfillment proof, as for any order.

What operators should do now

Attach those elements to the transaction record at authorization time, not when the chargeback arrives. A dispute filed sixty days later is only winnable if the data was kept. Operators that already store authentication results and prior customer history for Compelling Evidence 3.0 are most of the way there; agent identifiers are one more field on the same record. If the schemes introduce dedicated codes, the evidence requirements will likely build on what the frameworks already define.
