Is FPX being replaced in Malaysia?

Short answer

PayNet is moving online checkout from FPX to DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets, which adds e-wallets to bank payments and connects over 40 banks and e-wallets. Maybank switched its customers on March 31, 2025. FPX is still listed by PayNet, so merchants often see both.

In detail

Gradually. FPX has long been the reference online payment method in Malaysia: it redirects the shopper to their bank to approve a payment. PayNet is now moving checkout to DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets, which connects over 40 banks and e-wallets and lets shoppers pay from either.

What has happened so far

Maybank, the largest bank, moved its customers from FPX to DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets on March 31, 2025. FPX is still listed by PayNet, so merchants often see both names during the transition, depending on the bank and the gateway.

Why the change

The new service brings e-wallets into the same online flow as bank accounts. It sits on the DuitNow rails that already power instant transfers and DuitNow QR, which processed 3 billion transactions in 2025. Mobile banking reached 25 million active users in 2025, so most shoppers approve payments in an app.

What it means for payment operators

For operators serving Malaysian merchants, the practical question is coverage: the checkout should support DuitNow Online Banking/Wallets while FPX remains in use. Working with a local provider that handles both, and following PayNet's timeline, avoids losing shoppers whose bank has already switched.
