How do Mexicans pay online with cash?

Short answer

They receive a reference at checkout and pay at a store counter, mostly at OXXO, which had 24,708 stores in Mexico in June 2026, or at chains such as 7-Eleven and Farmacias del Ahorro. Payment is confirmed to the merchant automatically. Cash on delivery is also common.

In detail

With a voucher. At checkout the shopper receives a reference or barcode, then pays in cash at a store counter. Payment is confirmed to the merchant automatically, and the order ships.

Where they pay

OXXO is the leading network, with 24,708 stores in Mexico at the end of June 2026, and OXXO Pay is now run through FEMSA's Spin. Other chains such as 7-Eleven, Farmacias del Ahorro and Walmart collect payments through aggregator networks.

How common it is

In AMVO's 2026 study, 23% of online shoppers paid cash at a retail chain and 14% paid cash on delivery. Cash remains the default for small spending: INEGI's 2024 survey shows that 85.2% of adults prefer cash for purchases up to 500 pesos. Cash on delivery is common for marketplace and social commerce orders.

What it means for payment operators

Cash vouchers let your merchants reach Mexican shoppers without cards or who prefer not to pay online by card. They are asynchronous: the reference has an expiry date, and payment arrives later. Operators need a local provider that covers the main store networks, notifications when payment is made and reconciliation that matches each voucher to its order.
