Real-Time Rail
The RTR is a new national system for instant payments with rich ISO 20022 data. It aims to support businesses with faster, data-rich payments, beyond what e-Transfer offers.
Interac e-Transfer
Already widely used for person-to-person and some business payments, with funds usually available within minutes.
Open banking
Canada's framework, called consumer-driven banking, will let consumers share their financial data with accredited providers. A second phase is expected to allow payment initiation, opening account-to-account payments for commerce.
What to watch
Launch dates for RTR, accreditation of providers and the timing of payment initiation. Dates in payments modernization have moved before, so plans should allow for delays.
What it means for payment operators
For your merchants in Canada, real-time and open banking payments will add new options in the next few years. A payment network that can add new rails as they launch keeps them ready.
