Does adding an acquirer mean new work for every merchant?

Short answer

Not when acquirers sit behind one infrastructure layer. On NORBr, new acquirers are integrated in the global payment network and then activated per market and per merchant. Merchants keep the same checkout and integration, routing rules decide which acquirer handles each payment, and settlements from the new partner join the same reconciliation.

In detail

Not when acquirers sit behind one infrastructure layer. On NORBr, new acquirers are integrated in the global payment network and then activated per market and per merchant. Merchants keep the same checkout and integration, routing rules decide which acquirer handles each payment, and settlements from the new partner join the same reconciliation.

Not behind one infrastructure layer

When each merchant integrates directly with an acquirer, adding a second one means a new integration per merchant. When merchants integrate once with the operator's platform, acquirers sit behind that layer: the operator adds the acquirer, and merchants keep the same checkout and API.

What happens on NORBr

  • The new acquirer is integrated in the global payment network, once, for every operator.
  • The operator activates it per market and per merchant.
  • Routing rules decide which acquirer handles each payment.
  • Settlements from the new acquirer join the same reconciliation and the same merchant statements.

What merchants experience

Nothing, unless the operator chooses to tell them. Stored cards remain usable through universal and network tokens. Subscriptions keep billing. Reporting shows the new acquirer as one more provider behind the same transactions. For the operator, this changes the economics of multi-acquiring: adding a provider is a commercial decision with a configuration step, not a migration project with a merchant communication plan. The work that remains is the operator's own: contract, onboarding with the acquirer, and watching the first transactions.
