What TWINT is
TWINT is the payment app owned by Swiss banks. It counted well over 6 million active users and 901 million transactions in 2025, 77% of them commercial and 23% between individuals. Shoppers pay by scanning a QR code or confirming in the app, and the payment is debited from their bank account or linked card.
Its position is shifting
TWINT's share of all mobile payments fell from 62.7% to 55.6% in May 2026 as card-based wallets such as Apple Pay gain ground. It remains the method Swiss shoppers expect to see at checkout, and it also offers a pay later option.
What else Swiss shops need
- Debit and credit cards, including through Apple Pay and Google Pay.
- Purchase on invoice, which covered 34.6% of online spending in May 2026.
- Prepayment by bank transfer, still offered by almost 70% of online shops.
What it means for payment operators
For operators serving Swiss merchants, TWINT is a priority local method. Connecting a provider that supports it, with CHF settlement, and enabling it per merchant next to cards and invoice completes the Swiss checkout.
