Can a VRP payment be disputed?
There is no card chargeback for VRP. Protections come from the scheme rules: the UK’s UKPI scheme includes consumer safeguards and a dispute process. The customer can also revoke the consent at any time to stop future payments.
In detail
There is no card chargeback for VRP. Protections come from the scheme rules: the UK's UKPI scheme includes consumer safeguards and a dispute process. The customer can also revoke the consent at any time to stop future payments.
Why VRP differs from cards
A VRP is an account-to-account push payment. Once sent, it settles at once, and there is no card network dispute layer to reverse it. Consumer protection therefore has to be built into the scheme that governs commercial VRP.
What protects the customer
- Limits set by the customer on each consent, such as maximum amount and frequency.
- The ability to view and revoke consents in the banking app.
- Scheme rules that define when a customer can claim a refund, for example for payments outside the agreed terms.
- Regulatory rules on unauthorized payments, which apply as for other payments.
What it means for merchants
Merchants avoid chargeback fees and friendly fraud through card disputes, but must follow scheme rules and handle complaints. Payments taken outside the consent limits can be reclaimed.
Sweeping VRP
Payments between a person's own accounts carry less risk, and disputes are rare.
What it means for payment operators
For your merchants using VRP, clear consent terms and accurate records of each payment are the best defense in a dispute. Operations data that links each payment to its consent and status keeps those records ready.
