Are fees netted or shown separately?

Short answer

Shown separately. Providers report fees differently: some net them from the payout, others list them on their own lines. On NORBr, fees are itemized as their own movements, covering interchange, scheme fees, acquirer markup, gateway and authorization fees. That lets an operator check each provider's charges and explain every payout to its merchants.

In detail

Shown separately. Providers report fees differently: some net them from the payout, others list them on their own lines. On NORBr, fees are itemized as their own movements, covering interchange, scheme fees, acquirer markup, gateway and authorization fees. That lets an operator check each provider's charges and explain every payout to its merchants.

Why netting hides cost

Many providers deduct their fees from the payout and report a net amount, sometimes with a monthly summary of fees. That makes it hard to see what each transaction cost, to compare providers, or to explain a payout to a merchant. Providers that list fees on separate lines make it possible, but each uses its own categories and formats.

How NORBr presents fees

  • Each fee is a movement of its own, attached to the transaction it relates to.
  • Fees are itemized by type: interchange, scheme fees, acquirer markup, gateway and authorization fees.
  • Netted payouts are decomposed back into gross amount and fees, using the provider's fee data.

What it enables

Checking each provider's charges against the contract, transaction by transaction. Comparing the effective cost of two providers for the same card type and market, which feeds routing decisions. Explaining every merchant payout: gross sales, refunds, chargebacks, fees by type, net paid. For operators that resell acquiring, the itemization is also the basis for their own pricing: the margin between what providers charge and what merchants pay is visible per transaction rather than estimated at month end.
